The water rill was very much the starting point for the design in the back garden, but I really wanted it to be part of the summer house area, a feature to almost stumble upon further down the garden, rather than being viewed from the raised terrace.

The design evolved from that point and in order to deal with the sloping site, the obvious solution was to terrace the garden to create 2 garden rooms, one that could be viewed from the house and the other to be discovered as you walked down the garden.  It was also really important to provide good screening against the end boundary wall.

Lynne and Andrew asked me to design the garden in such a way as to allow them access to the utility area and summerhouse without having to walk on the grass in the Winter.  In order to keep the lawn areas intact, I chose instead to create utility pathways through the deep planting beds.

The levels in the front garden were slightly more complex and in order to facilitate easy access to the bin store, I needed to ensure that there was a route around the house without steps.  At the initial meeting we discussed the possibility of reinforcing the front lawn so that the 6 cars could be accommodated without the need for too much hard landscaping.
